Obituary: on 6 September 2012: Elizabeth Jean Stivala Resident of E. Palo Alto 1927 - 2012 On August 30 2012 our beautiful sweet mother passed away surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born on December 17, 1927 in San Francisco to Lena and Emmanuel Schembri. She attended St. Joseph's Elementary School in Menlo Park, Sequoia High School in Redwood City, and The Music and Art Institute in San Francisco. She lived in San Francisco on Oakdale, in the Bayview district with her family. The family then moved to East Palo Alto in 1932 during the Great Depression and lived in a house on Green Street. She worked at the Emporium, ushered at the Opera house, and practiced piano with soul and dedication. She took private piano lessons with Margaret Christianson, and became an accomplished pianist at a young age. In February of 1951, at the age of twenty four, she married the love of her life, Paul. Together they had five children- Mary, Paul, Jean, Bob, and Steve- and enjoyed 61 years of true and complete happiness. Besides enjoying playing and listening to classical music, Betty also loved to garden. She had a big yard where she spent many hours tending to a wide variety of plants. There were also several vegetables and fruits which she incorporated into lovely and healthful meals for her family. With her big smile and ability to laugh at herself, Betty put everyone at ease. She was like a cozy fire-lit room on a rainy night. She focused her life on loving her husband, children and grand-children. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Her family was the most important thing in her life and the source of all of her happiness. She lived a simple life centered on her home and loved ones. It was exactly the life that she wanted and she felt great satisfaction and gratitude in having it. Betty is predeceased by her parents Lena and Emmanuel Schembri, her sister Catherine, her brother Manuel, and her daughter Mary. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Paul, her sisters Dolores and Florence, her sisters in law Carmen Schembri and Frances Galea, her children Paul, Jean (Dan), Bob (Krista), and Steve, her eight grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Obituary: on 9 April 1986: Charles Grima A Mass will be said tomorrow for Charles "Carinelo" Grima, 84, who raised six children in San Francisco and served his church as deacon and sexton for over 50 years. He died Saturday just before 7 a.m. Mass at All Hallows Church on Oakdale Avenue, where for many years he had tolled the bells for daily services. "They said you could set a watch by him," said his daughter, Sister Grace, of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. She manages the All Hallows senior housing project. Sister Grace is one of six children of Charles and Carmen Grima, all of whom attended All Hallows School and two of whom have taken holy orders. Sister Grace said her father came from the island of Malta when he was 19. He first worked making jam at the Oreste Fruit Co., 24th and York streets, then as a tanner for the Legallet Tanning Co. He began as sexton at St. Paul of the Shipwreck when it was a church for Maltese families, and for the French church, St. Jeanne D'Arc. All were in the neighborhood of the present All Hallows when there were Maltese and French communities there, Sister Grace said. Her father was a tanner for 30 years, she said, but worked many more years than that for the church. He kept things cleaned and repaired, fixed the flowers for Mass, trained altar boys for church ceremonies, and put out the hymnals and led the singing. Mr. Grima was at All Hallows when an injury resulted in the amputation of one leg, she said, but after a year he once again mastered the 20 steps that led to the choir loft, and was able to start tolling the bells again for 7 o'clock Mass. He is survived by his wife, Carmen, and children, Brother Joseph Grima, S.M., of Berkeley; Mary Pierce of Daly City; Sylvia Codori of San Mateo; Francis Grima of Vernon, Tex; John Grima of San Francisco, and Sister Grace. There are eight grandchildren.
